How it all started

Since 2017, the Pleasantville Bakery has been serving sweets and smiles, thanks to the owner Kemar “Q” Newell.

Born in Jamaica, Newell moved to the US in 1993 when he was 4 years old. It has been his dream to open a bakery ever since he was 17 years old.

Newell was able to learn a variety of baking techniques simply by watching, but he felt that more professional training would help him achieve his goal. In 2015, he enrolled in the Toronto-based Bonnie Gordon College of Confectionary Arts, where he spent an intense six weeks studying baking, pastry arts, cake design and confections.

Returning to New York, Newell worked at a Long Island bakery while also baking and selling cakes on the side. He saved every penny he could, until he bought his dream bakery in 2017.

Each morning, he arrives at the bakery at 3 a.m. to prepare for the day’s hustle and bustle. To Q, “What one cookie can do for a child’s day is what makes it worth it.”
